General Geothermal Questions
How does geothermal HVAC work?
A geothermal, or ground-source, heat pump system uses the relatively constant temperature of the ground (or a water source) to heat and cool a building. In winter, it pulls heat from the ground into the building; in summer, it moves heat from the building back into the ground. Because it's moving heat rather than generating it, it typically operates far more efficiently than conventional air-source HVAC equipment.
What is a ground-source heat pump?
A ground-source heat pump is the equipment at the center of a geothermal system. It exchanges heat with buried pipes (a ground loop) or a water source, rather than with the outside air the way a conventional heat pump does.
What is the difference between geothermal HVAC and conventional HVAC?
Conventional HVAC exchanges heat with outdoor air, so its efficiency swings with outdoor temperature extremes. Geothermal systems exchange heat with the ground or groundwater, which stays far more stable year-round, so the system typically runs more efficiently and predictably.
What are open-loop and closed-loop geothermal systems?
A closed-loop system circulates fluid through a sealed pipe loop buried in the ground or submerged in a pond or lake. An open-loop system draws water from a well or other source, exchanges heat with it, and discharges it back. The right choice depends on geology, water availability, and local regulations.
How long do geothermal systems last?
Ground-source heat pump equipment typically lasts on the order of two decades with proper maintenance, while a well-installed ground loop can last considerably longer, often cited at 50 years or more.
How long do geothermal ground loops last?
Properly designed and installed ground loops are typically rated for multiple decades of service; many manufacturers and installers cite 50-plus years as a reasonable expectation for a correctly executed closed-loop system.
What maintenance does geothermal require?
Geothermal systems generally require less maintenance than conventional HVAC since the outdoor equipment (the loop) is buried and not exposed to weather. Routine maintenance still matters: filter changes, periodic checks of the indoor unit, water flow, and controls.
What causes geothermal systems to lose efficiency?
Common causes include an undersized or improperly designed ground loop, air or debris in the loop, declining water flow, controls that aren't configured correctly, or equipment that was mismatched to the building's actual load.
Can geothermal be used in commercial buildings?
Yes. Commercial geothermal systems are common in offices, schools, healthcare facilities, and other large buildings, often using larger or multiple ground loops sized to the building's load.
Can existing buildings be converted to geothermal?
In many cases, yes. Conversion feasibility depends on available land or drilling access for the ground loop, existing distribution systems, and budget, each of which is worth an independent evaluation before committing.
Can geothermal contribute toward LEED certification?
Geothermal systems can contribute toward LEED credits related to energy performance, and are frequently part of high-performance building strategies. Specific credit eligibility depends on the current LEED rating system and project scope.
What are common geothermal installation problems?
Frequently seen issues include an undersized ground loop, poor grouting or backfill around loop piping, water-flow problems, controls that were never properly commissioned, and equipment installed without accounting for the building's actual heating and cooling load.

What does a geothermal HVAC consultant do?
A geothermal consultant provides independent, specialized expertise on ground-source heat pump systems: reviewing designs, troubleshooting underperforming systems, evaluating existing installations, and supporting the owners, engineers, and contractors already involved in a project.
When should you hire a geothermal consultant?
